Chapter 7

L ana glanced up from her desk to see her cousin, Daniel, staring through the front office window. Keeping her features impassive, despite her increasing heart rate, she reached under her desk and pressed the panic button.

The doors immediately locked. An iron grate unfolded and clicked into place.

Daniel watched it all with cold eyes, then turned to meet her gaze. His eyes widened as he glanced past her, then he turned and ran.

“Lock yourself in the bathroom.” Lance darted past her and pressed a code on a pad near the door. The iron grate rolled up, and he barged out the doors.

Lana grabbed her large shoulder bag and entered the women’s restroom across the room. Locking the door behind her, she moved to the stall furthest from the door and sat down to wait.

Her body trembled as she waited. What if something happened to Lance? Daniel could easily hide in wait in an alley or doorway and attack.

Retrieving her cell phone from her bag, she sent a quick text to Bolton and Clark in hopes that one of them was close enough, and free of responsibility, to come help their brother. Lance might be angry with her for pulling them away from their jobs, but his safety was more important than his pride.

Bolton replied that he could be there in less than five minutes. Lana closed her eyes and prayed.

Someone pounded on the door.

She slapped her hand over her mouth to stifle a shriek.

“Lana!”

She rushed to the door and threw herself at Lance. “You’re alright.”

He chuckled. “Of course, I am, but Daniel got away. Not a sign of him.” He jerked his head toward Bolton. “Thanks for the backup, but it wasn’t needed.” He tapped the end of her nose. “And thanks for caring enough to call my brother.”

“The panic button worked well,” Bolton said, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “But you still called me. I came running and get no thanks.”

“Poor Bolton.” Lana planted a kiss on his cheek.

“I’ll never wash my face again.” He pretended to swoon.

“Shut up and get back to work.” Lance grinned and shook his head. “Since it appears Daniel is making his move, I’d like to take Lana home. Can you handle things here?”

He nodded. “If you think it’ll be a day or two before she’s back to work, I’ll call the temporary agency and get a receptionist.”

“No need.” Lana scowled at Lance. “I’m not going to hide. Now that Daniel knows about the iron grate, he won’t be back. He’ll try to get me somewhere else.” His study of the grate hadn’t escaped her attention. He wasn’t stupid. He knew he couldn’t get to her that way.

“The psycho thinks you belong to him.”

She listened in shock as Lance recounted his phone conversation with her cousin the day before. “Were you going to tell me this at all?”

He shrugged. “When the time was right.”

Bolton glanced from her to his brother. “I, uh…yeah, you two work this out. I’m hiding in my office.” He rushed down the hall.
